Groove Punks Slot Car Racing

A slot car can't steer. It rides the groove, and all you get is the throttle. Hold it down, let go before the corner, hang the tail out around the guide pin — and don't pop out of the slot. Then build your own track from pieces and send it to a friend.

Hold = throttle

01 How it plays

  1. One thumb, no steering

The guide pin holds the car in the slot. Press and it pulls full power at once, let go and it coasts — like the trigger on a real controller.

  2. Corners are the game

Above a certain speed the tail breaks loose and the car drifts around the pin: nose in, back end out. The drift is fine. Riding its edge is the fastest way around.

  3. Hold too long and you're off

Keep the power on mid-corner and the slide keeps growing until the pin pops out. The car slithers across the floor in a shower of sparks and a marshal puts it back. You lose seconds, not a life.

  4. Twelve tracks, four cups

Every cup adds new pieces: hairpins, chicanes, banked corners, a hump, a lane change, a crossing. The floor changes too — club room, kid's room, attic, garage.

  5. Race the punks

Spike, Roxy, Neon and Grandpa fill the other lanes. Five difficulty steps, and the rubber band only ever helps the ones behind you.

  6. Build it yourself

Straights, curves, chicanes, crossings. The loop has to close, the editor tells you when it doesn't — and the finished track packs into a link you can paste to a friend.

02 Screens

03 Two thumbs, one phone

Turn the phone sideways and there are two tracks on one screen: your thumb on the left, theirs on the right. Three or four players split it into quarters on a tablet or a TV. The empty lanes fill up with punks.

Split screen: Spike crossing the line on the left half, Roxy drifting through a corner on the right half
Two players on one phone. Each half has its own speedo and its own hand controller.

Groove Punks is a one-thumb arcade racer built on the thing every slot car set gets right: the car can't steer, so all the skill sits in the throttle. Hold it, let go before the corner, ride the drift around the guide pin and stay in the slot. Tracks are built from pieces, so players make their own and swap them as links. Made by Punx Arcade, a tiny indie studio from Czechia, after Slope Punks: Heli Ski.
